Teacher Appreciation Week Reflection

A little girl in my kindergarten class recently had a birthday. We will call her ‘Rosa for privacy purposes. She celebrated with a party at Chuck E. Cheese on Wednesday, and the next morning she brought me a huge piece of chocolate cake. It meant the world to me. I happen to also have a picture Rosa drew of the two of us on my first day with the class, back in December.

The late and great author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once said: "The little things are infinitely the most important." I don't think there is a more accurate statement in the world.

If I reflect on my own life, I have to be honest: the little things matter far more to me than the big ones. I currently work in a large inner city school district and have been blessed to play a role in educating the hearts and minds of so many truly extraordinary and wonderful children throughout the years. It is these moments, the hand drawn pictures, and the idea that I was deemed special enough to warrant a piece of birthday cake, that make the challenges and hard work worthwhile and give me the strength to continue to learn and grow to best serve my students and their families.

It’s been a very special Teacher Appreciation Week for sure, but honestly, all my weeks of teaching kindergarten are full of these precious moments, and I am extremely grateful.

Yours truly,

Jennifer
