I knew I had to have this shirt from Pippi Post as soon as I saw it, because there is not a lot that compares to finding a favorite new book! It says, "I like to party, and by party, I mean read books." If you have not visited the Pippi Post Shop, you MUST! Use my link now and you will be amazed at their adorable 'bookish' merchandise!

To quote Emma Thompson, "I think books are like people, in the sense that they'll turn up in your life when you most need them."

Here are a few recent favorites that I've read for pleasure and a few awesome new books I am planning to share with kids soon!

The Summer We Started Over: A Novel by Nancy Thayer

Nantucket is the perfect setting for this story about two sisters who reconnect while pursuing their dreams. Although they have a difficult past to face, hope is right around the corner for both of them.

How to Write a Poem by Kwame Alexander

This is a much-needed book for every classroom or home library for children ages 5-12. It will fully inspire children to write and give them the confidence to express themselves every time they read it.

All Summer Long by Dorothea Benton Frank

In this story, lives are changing, and throughout the course of a summer we get to know the very stylish Olivia Ritchie, who is an interior designer for glamorous clients in NYC, and her husband, Nick, who is a retired professor who desires a peaceful retired life back home in South Carolina.  The different perspectives of the characters come alive in a very relatable way, which I always appreciate as a reader.

We Are Here by Tami Charles

This book is an extremely well-done celebration of Black and Brown Heritage and community. The powerful text assures every reader of the extraordinary legacy left by the Black community. It is perfect for all elementary classrooms.

When the Summer Was Ours by Roxanne Veletzos

This is a beautiful WWII era historical novel with vividly portrayed characters. It is a quick read because you simply don't want to put it down! My favorite character was Aleandro because of his depth of emotion throughout the entire story.

Go Left by Peter Reynolds

"One day for no particular reason, nothing was going right. Absolutely positively, nothing was going right. So, I decided to go left..." This is how the book begins, and the story becomes a wonderful message of perseverance for all! I think this would be an AMAZING school-wide read-aloud.

Mystic Summer: A Novel by Hannah McKinnon

Mystic, Connecticut is about an hour away from where I live and one of my favorite places, so of course I wanted to read this book. It did NOT disappoint! Maggie Griffin is a schoolteacher from Boston facing a career challenge. She goes home to Mystic, reconnects with an old friend named Cameron, who unfortunately, is struck with tragedy. Maggie learns how important it is to stay true to herself as she reflects on her life and choices and supports Cameron along the way.

An American Story

by Kwame Alexander

This is another work of excellence by Kwame Alexander that tells the story of slavery through the voice of a teacher struggling to help her students understand. Kwame's dedication is "This is for the ones who want to speak the truth, the ones doing the hard and sacred work of nurturing young minds into beautiful human beings...the teachers."
