Iris Apfel: So Much More Than a Fashion Icon

Published on 2 March 2024 at 10:04

You may have heard that the phenomenal, vibrant, truly delightful creative genius, Iris Apfel, has passed away. She died yesterday at the age of 102. I have followed her life and career for as long as I can possibly remember. She was a powerful woman who represented style, but so much more. She showed us all that we can express ourselves as we see fit, and that our ideas are worthy, simply because they are ours!

It was never about the clothes and accessories alone. It was always about the way certain pieces allowed her to celebrate herself, her environment, and life itself. When asked by reporters throughout the years what her inspiration was, she often answered, "Simply getting out of bed in the morning!"

I have quoted her many, many times throughout the years, especially when I had my fashion blog.

My favorites: "When you don't dress like everybody else, you don't have to think like everybody else."

"Clothes are not frippery. Properly done, they can be an art form."

"You learn as you grow up, if you're intelligent-or even three-quarter witted-that there is no free lunch. You pay for things in various ways. Living, loving, and everything else is a matter of the same principles: You have to learn to work with what you have."

I wish I had the chance to meet her. I will miss her.

Best,

Jennifer

ps. I'm currently wondering if I might need this magnet set for my refrigerator and this book for my classroom. After all, it IS Woman's History Month!
